Strategic Sustainability Scan (SSS) for government organisations
The SSS is also developed specifically for governments, semi-governments and organisations such as the Water Boards and tourism promotion organisations. The system used is the same as in the Strategic Sustainability Scan, but it is adapted to daily practice of the concerned organisations.

Examples

  • Water Purification Board of the Islands and Forelands in South-Holland (ZHEW). Government has to take responsibility in its own house as well: on the one hand to set an example, and on the other hand because it is also a player in society. The ZHEW (now called: Water Board of the Delta of Holland) has embraced the challenge of sustainability with enthusiasm. The Water Board was the first to scrutinise its policies and activities and had its sustainability performance assessed by the SSS.

  • Flanders Tourism and Sustainability.’Tourism Flanders’ is an agency of the Flemish government responsible for promoting tourism in the Flanders region of Belgium and supporting quality control. The agency wants to make Flanders a sustainable tourist destination. For this purpose it needs to carry out a qualitative sustainable tourism policy. This can only occur if sustainability is integrated into all the departments of Tourism Flanders and if Tourism Flanders as a whole operates along sustainable lines. That is why in 2004 it decided to examine whether sustainability was integrated and anchored in all the activities of the agency. BECO implemented this assessment using the Strategic Sustainability Scan.
